Course leader: MATT OLDEN

MATT'S PHASE 1 COURSE OUTLINE

Matthew Olden makes stuff in Max/MSP.

He has been busy making the Jungulator, a real-time instrument/dj tool that makes a wicked shindig sound, and has won a couple of awards.

He records and makes music with Robotmonkey, Tank, Socket and I Am The Mighty Jungulator. He's been the Mighty Jungulator all over the place. This year has seen him perform at the Arc Art Festival in Tromso, Cybersonica at the ICA in London and at the Big Chill in Hereford.

He's a member of Socket, and is a working member of Jony Easterby's National Geographic.

He makes installations and interactive environments under the name Sensormedia, real cool ones using Max/MSP.

He also helps others to make and realise their own projects. His personal favourite was programming Jony Easterby's fantastic Fluxgate 2002, for the Northern Lights festival in Tromso, where he got to meet royalty, refused to eat a whale and threw snowballs a lot.

Course Tutor: DAVID STEVENS

DAVID'S PHASE 1 COURSE OUTLINE

Born in Leicester, England in November 1952.

I was fortunate to grow up in a county that had an exceptional music education system. I played cornet and trumpet from an early age, later graduating to French Horn which I played in the Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra up to the age of 19. While I was still at school I composed and recorded my first pieces for homemade electronics and tape.

I moved to London to study at the Royal Academy of Music, which I left within the year. I then worked for Peter Zinovief's company EMS demonstrating the VCS3 synth range, and also ran an evening class in tape/electronic music at the Cockpit theatre in London.

After a period in India, I began working as a broadcast sound engineer, and later as a music engineer/producer, at Capital Radio in London, where I stayed for 9 years.

After this I worked for a while as a freelance dubbing engineer in television, and then began writing music for television, which I've been doing for 11 years.

About 5 years ago I began working with SoundMaker & SoundMagic software, stretching and filtering naturally occurring sounds to make long slowly evolving harmonic tones, which I wove together into long, slowly evolving pieces. Wishing to create similar sounds in realtime, I then worked with STEIM's LiSa software for a while, before deciding to create my own sound transforming software using Max/MSP software.
